About This Blog

My quest for health started in August 2009. My husband and I, with our 16 month old daughter, were missionaries in Ghana, West Africa. At the time, we had been in Ghana for almost 3 years. I became infected with malaria. It started off with cold/flu-like symptoms on a Friday night. By Sunday, I realized that what I had was no cold, but something that I had feared getting since I decided to go to Africa. I had malaria! I was able to start the three day treatment that same day. All day Monday I was still very sick; and by Tuesday morning, I was so weak that I could not leave my bed to go and get my crying baby from her crib. My husband took me to the hospital that morning, causing me to come face to face with yet another of my greatest fears - the medical system of a third world country. I spent three days in the hospital - and, oh, the stories I could tell about that experience. I returned home better, but my energy level was still very low. Gradually, I began to feel better. It took about two months before I felt completely normal again. This experience caused me to be more conscious about the health of my family. And since I wasn't in a place where good medical care was readily available, I began to do research on what I could do medically and naturally to keep my family's immune systems in good shape. Health has become a very interesting topic for me, and I'm always looking to learn more. The purpose of this blog is to share some of the things that I've learned, and to learn more. I want health to be a lifelong quest for me!

A new year = a potentially new you!

I love beginnings. They are always full of new hopes and dreams. Some may say that resolutions and goals don't work. I can see how many people could feel that way. I don't think I have ever successfully completed a resolution in the manner that I initially planned. However, I tend to take the stance that if you aim at nothing, you will hit your mark every time. For that reason, Each year I think of several different things I want to add to my life that are realistically attainable (like exercise); I then plan to what extent I want to do each item (20 minutes 6 days a week); lastly, I use a calendar to keep tally of the days that I am successful (each day I complete the task gets a smiley face on the calendar, the other days are left blank.) Like I said earlier, I never get to the end of a year and see a perfect year, but I do look back on my year and see a better me. So, each year I may not get to where I want to be, but I never stay where I used to be. Therefore, I am happy.

What does this mean to you in the quest for health? Only this: You need to ask yourself the question, "Where do I want my health to be?" Then you need to take steps to get there. In doing this you need to be honest and realistic with yourself. If you overwhelm yourself with difficult goals, you will quit. When you miss a day, don't try to double up on your goal to make up for it; just start again the next day with a fresh start. Do this and you will be amazed at your accomplishments by the end of 2012.
